Pennsylvania Department of Banking
Since 1891, Pennsylvania’s Department of Banking has ensured the safety and soundness of state-chartered financial institutions. Financial services have changed dramatically in the past 100 years and so has the department. We started as a small government agency that, in general, issued charters and made sure that banks operated with integrity. Today we’re 174 people working with a wide array of financial services, from banks and credit unions to pawn shops and check cashers—even some car dealers that offer their own financing.

Of course, we still make sure that the financial institutions licensed in Pennsylvania act responsibly and comply with the law. It’s the heart of what we do because we know that these institutions hold the hard-earned money used to pay the mortgages, buy the groceries, and reach the dreams of Pennsylvania’s families.
